There is no greater game than baseball. Watch Ken Burns’ documentary and try not to cry. I can’t. I love every second of that film. The way the old days were with massive crowds dressed to the nines packed tight into shotgun stadiums and watching guys named “Old Hoss” and “Wahoo Sam” play a game so beautiful, God must have invented it.
Everything about baseball is quintessentially American. There is no better place to spend a warm summer day than at the ballpark watching your favorite team. My love for the game is why I umpire high school games here in Denver, CO. My playing days are over but I still need to get on the field a fair amount. Just writing about baseball is juicing me up.
Mike Trout was real MVP the year Miggy won the triple crown. Look at his advanced stats, WAR, OBP, total bases, and defense, and the argument becomes clear. However, not awarding the MVP to a triple crown winner is borderline blasphemous. It’s something that simply won’t happen. I even called WFAN that year to please my case, only to be turned away by the late night host. I even asked who he’d rather have to build a team around, Miggy or Mike Trout. Keep in mind that Mike Trout was in his early twenties and Miggy was pushing 30. Nevertheless, Mike Trout was not his answer. The point is, baseball changes fast. Adapting to these changes is how players, coaches, even fantasy managers achieve success.
